The man decides to remain on the train, and later is awakened by another conductor who assures him that there is no Willoughby on the line anywhere, and he must have been dreaming.

At some point, in desperation, the man comments to himself that the next time they stop in Willoughby, he is going to get off.

At the end of the episode, the train has been stopped, and where the man had been seated remains only his abandoned brief case. Two policemen beside the train are discussing why the train has stopped, and that soon, it will be on its way. The train conductor explains that a man "shouted something about Willoughby" before jumping off the train, and was killed instantly. The final quote of the deceased man:

“Some people aren’t built for competition, or big pretentious houses they can’t afford, or rich communities they don’t feel comfortable in, or country clubs they wear around their neck like a badge of status.”

As a young man, I struggled with suicidal ideation, and on more than one occasion imagined jumping off the world into my own “Willoughby.” At one point, I made a list of reasons to live and a second of reasons to kill myself.

The former was a bit longer than the latter, so here I am. I think of this episode from time to time, and the close call I had.
